Æthelflæd’s (pronounced Ethil- fled) armor is based on the giant Amazon scarab beetle (Coprophanaeus Lancifer.) What I love about this insect is its overall shape, how it looks like it has been windswept. All the arches and curves of its body also accent the color shifting effect of its exoskeleton. She is named after Æthelflæd, Lady of Mercia, a much beloved ruler and warrior who lived from the late 9th to early 10th centuries in England. She stands tall, ready to do battle and defend her people.
She wears a crown that sweeps back over her head, like the beetle on which her armor is based. She carries a shield, the design of which is based on those carried by Saxons, with elements incorporated from the shapes of the scarab by which she was inspired.
Her armor, sword, shield, and crown have been 3D printed and painted with acrylic. Her head, hands and feet are made of polymer clay and have also been painted with acrylic. Her eyes are made of glass and her hair is wool. Under her armor, her clothing is made of layers of silk, tulle and metal mesh fabric.
